What happens when you blend class, elegance, coffee and playful sass?
You get the one, the only @caffeinekim
We are so excited to announce that @caffeinekim (the account) will be joining Holey Brewed as one of our Content Contributors and Kim herself will be joining our Leadership Team as our Ontario Divisional Head.
We had a chance to sit down with @caffeinekim at her favourite coffee shop Versus coffee for an exclusive interview.
Mr. HB: Kim! We are so happy to be here with you. How are you doing?
CK: Well it’s the weekend, the sun is shining, the Toronto Raptors are champions and we are sitting here having a coffee. How could I be anything but great?!
Mr. HB: When we asked you to pick your favourite coffee shop to meet at, you selected Versus Coffee. What makes this place your favourite spot?
CK: Versus coffee was the first coffee shop in Toronto to introduce colourful lattes to me and I just love the idea so much. I can always count on one of their delicious colour-filled lattes to brighten up my day. The Baristas are also so friendly and sociable here, it always makes me feel so welcome. I'm also super in love with their all white clean modern look, and admire the way they decorate their walls with work from local artists.
Mr. HB: Where did your love for coffee come from?
CK: I’ve always had a passion for coffee. During my childhood, I’d spend hours at my parent’s office and to pass the time I’d often spending hours in the office kitchen creating new “recipes” and playing with the coffee maker. As I grew older, coffee took a bigger role in my life. Each cup became a moment to cherish, a pause when I take a break from whatever I am having in my plate and simply enjoy the goodness in my cup, a conversation starter and most importantly a drink that brings people together like no other.
Mr. HB: Why did you start your Instagram page @caffeinekim?
CK: After failing to resist taking pictures of each cup of happiness I consume and always being the go-to among friends and family for cafe recommendations around the city, I was encouraged to start my page. I have learned so much about myself and the love I have for the city.
Mr. HB: What is the best thing about running your page?
CK: I have just met some of the kindest, coolest people (like the Holey Brewed community) from running this page, and have been able to talk to people from all over the world about common interests like coffee which I otherwise would not have been able to do. Nothing feels better than receiving a message or DM from someone saying that one of my posts really impacted them or got them thinking.
Mr. HB: What is the vision behind your page? Where do you see this going?
CK: I want to create the same atmosphere on my page as the one created in coffee shops all over the world. A warm welcoming atmosphere where people can exchange opinions, converse, open their minds, find support as well as share my opinion of the different coffee shops I journey to. After all, conversation is the best ingredient of coffee. As the page continues to grow, it’s creating opportunities for me to meet new people and get involved in new collaborations. All of this is exciting and shaping the direction my page is going. Now that I am starting my journey with Holey Brewed, ask me again in a year as I will have a better answer for you.
Mr. HB: Why did you choose to join Holey Brewed?
CK: When I found Holey Brewed, I found a warm community of coffee lovers just like myself, all on the hunt for the best coffee and doughnuts in Toronto and the world. I feel it is important to communicate our experiences to other fellow coffee and doughnut lovers as well as share our honest opinions in ways of helping businesses in the city improve and grow. There are a lot of people/accounts on Instagram calling themselves coffee critiques, but the truth is that they are not really educating their followers. Holey Brewed ensures that with each critique, they are educating the masses and I absolutely love it!
Mr. HB: What would be your general advice to any coffee shop?
CK: Not everyone is a coffee/espresso taste connoisseur. Sometimes it's all about presentation and the way you make people feel. I think it's vital for a cafe's success to have their products be presentable and eye catching. Most coffees look the same, so having something that is different can make you really stand out and attract customers. An aesthetically pleasing cafe, such as the one we are in right now, is not only decorated to enhance its visual appeal but also gives compliment to the coffee you are serving. You want people to enjoy their environment as they would enjoy their coffee and visa versa.
Mr. HB: This is probably the most important question of the interview. What is @caffeinekim ‘s favourite type of coffee?
CK: Haha, my favourite coffee would have to be a classic latte, which I am having now. Foamed espresso drinks such as lattes and cappuccinos just make me so happy. They allow me to slow it down as I enjoy the drink and the moment as opposed to your on the go coffee or espresso.
Mr. HB: What else should we know about you? Tell us about yourself outside of coffee.
CK: Well.. I love traveling and discovering new places, that comes in handy for coffee crawls. I’m a huge foodie and will eat literally anything. Currently I’m studying psychology which you will find traces of on my page as it intertwines with my passion for helping others. I absolutely love dancing and try to do it as much as possible , sometimes earning me some weird looks on the street. I also enjoy horseback riding in my free time when I’m not working.
Mr. HB: Last question, what advice would you have for someone just getting into drinking coffee?
CK: I don't particularly think there is a certain piece of advice I would give as everyone drinks coffee for different reasons and has a different experience . But having said that, I would probably encourage people to take this time to slow things down. It might sounds silly but sometimes we get so lost in our day, rushing here and there, running around to complete a task, I think coffee is the perfect way to add a little mindfulness into your life. Really smell the aroma, feel the warmth of the cup around your hand, take that first sip slowly and really allow yourself to taste the different flavours, slow things down and enjoy the moment. It's very rare for two cups of coffee to taste exactly the same, challenge yourself to notice differences.
Mr. HB: Thanks again for the conversation, and we are so happy to have you join our team!
CK: My pleasure!
